BLUEBOOST DISSEMINATION TOUR
The BLUEBOOST project was featured on the regional radio channel Deltacat, presented by Ignasi Gairin from IRTA. The broadcast attracted significant attention from other media outlets, greatly increasing public awareness of the initiative. The project’s results are highly promising for the future of clam aquaculture in the Ebro Delta, a practice that had largely disappeared due to the invasion of the blue crab.
The BLUEBOOST project was presented on a regional television channel (3cat) by the IRTA team (Neil Duncan and Ignasi Gairin), being one of the most important media of the region. The project had an enormous attraction from other media, generating an important awareness of the project. The General Director of "Política Marítima y Pesca Sostenible de la Generalitat de Catalunya", Antoni Espanya recomended this Project as an alternative for a more competitive and sustainable Aquaculture.
Preliminary results from IRTA’s case study within the BLUEBOOST project were presented as an e-poster in the IMTA session at Aquaculture Europe 2025 in Valencia (Spain), organized by the European Aquaculture Society. The e-poster, authorized by Sandra Salcedo-Martínez of IRTA, showcased the outcomes of clam aquaculture carried out under an IMTA system. In this setup, clams were cultured in the same pond as flathead grey mullet, oysters, and macroalgae—species of high importance for aquaculture and with strong local commercial value.
The conference attracted an impressive audience of more than 2,000 representatives from research institutions, industry, and public authorities. BLUEBOOST was featured in the programme on the opening day within the Integrated Aquaculture session. The audience responded very positively, highlighting the presentation’s relevance and the valuable insights it provided.

Preliminary results of the specific case study of S2AQUA of the BLUEBOOST project were presented in an ePOSTER in the IMTA session at the AQUACULTURE EUROPE 2025, Valencia (Spain), organized by the European Aquaculture Society. This e-POSTER was authorized by Raquel Quintã from S2AQUA, showing the results of Ulva sp. in land ponds in an IMTA system. The genus Ulva (Ulvales, Ulvophyceae, Chlorophyta) shows a cosmopolitan distribution, including Spain and Portugal, characterized by high growth rates and with a wide commercial interest. The conference drew an impressive turnout of over 2,000 representatives from research institutions, industry, and public authorities. BLUEBOOST was included in the programme of the opening day within the Integrated Aquaculture Session. The audience responded very positively, noting the presentation’s relevance and the informative perspective it offered.

The presentation was well received, offering valuable insights to participants and generating positive feedback.

BLUEBOOST was presented by Neil Duncan from IRTA in the Conference Aquaculture Europe, Valencia, Spain organised by the European Aquaculture Society. The conference was an enormous success, attracting well over 2000 stakeholders from research, industry and government. BLUEBOOST was presented in the Integrated Aquaculture Session on the first day of the conference. The presebntation was well received, providing and insight to participants and positive feedback.

This week, Isasi Gairin (IRTA) presented the objectives of the BLUEBOOST project at the event held at "La Casa de la Cultura" in Girona, Spain, on 11 June 2025.
The presentation emphasized social dissemination, highlighting the importance of communicating projects like BLUEBOOST to society. The project partners recognize the significant benefits that stem from the circular economy and various sustainable aquaculture models.
Organized by "La Casa de la Cultura" in Girona, this event is part of an ongoing series of seminars delivered by experts to the general public, particularly those with a strong interest in the maritime sector and local activities. Such events provide an ideal platform for raising awareness about more sustainable aquaculture systems tailored to local needs.
Last month, our colleagues from the University of Helsinki, Xavier Irz and Fredrik Salenius, presented the BLUEBOOST project at the Nordic-Baltic food systems conference and policy forum (NFN), which was held at their home campus in Viikki, Helsinki, from 26 to 28.5.2025. The conference's overarching theme was “Challenging intersections: Securing sustainable food systems in turbulent times.”
In a session titled “Circular food systems and novel foods,” Fredrik presented a paper describing how novel production systems, such as the cultivation of low-trophic species and IMTA, can boost aquaculture's growth and value creation in the Baltic Sea region. The talk also highlighted the relevance of BLUEBOOST's work in improving aquaculture's environmental outcomes and promoting the production of novel blue foods.
The NFN conference provided an excellent opportunity to interact with food system researchers from the Nordic countries and the Baltic states and to discuss the key role of projects like BLUEBOOST in the transition towards a more sustainable food system.

In May, Dr Neil Duncan (IRTA) presented the objectives of the #BLUEBOOST project during the AQUAFUTURE event, held in Vigo, Spain (20–22 May 2025).
The presentation of the project was focused on the important companies attending this prestigious event. The International Aquaculture Industry Fair, Aquafuture Spain, is the largest technological, educational, promotional, and commercial event in the aquaculture sector in Southern Europe, where more than 210 exhibitors from 26 countries participated, giving an excellent opportunity to share the BLUEBOOST objectives.
It was the perfect environment to introduce new sustainable models for intensive aquaculture!!
The BLUEBOOST project was presented at the 16th Session of the Information System for the Promotion of Aquaculture in the Mediterranean (SIPAM), organized by the Scientific Advisory Committee on Aquaculture (CAQ) of FAO-GFCM at Monastir (Tunisia).
Our colleague @Fabrizio Capoccioni, National Focal Point for Italy, had the opportunity to present the @BLUEBOOST project as an international research initiative focused on the sustainable development of aquaculture, particularly in the Mediterranean area, where three different IMTA systems have been implemented. The session was organized in two amazing days full of knowledge, with the possibility to extend the BLUEBOOST project network.
This week, @Remigiusz_Panicz presented the objectives and first results of the #BLUEBOOST project during the @Sustainable Blue Economy Partnership workshop, held as part of the 4th Mission Arena by Blue Mission BANOS in Sopot, Poland (28–29 April 2025).
His talk focused on:
- Bioremediation and upcycling of sediments into circular, blue-based feed ingredients
- Development of freshwater IMTA (F-IMTA) systems with common carp, narrow-clawed crayfish, and watercress — creating innovative #bluefood solutions
The presentation and an engaging World Café session managed by #SBEP, #NCBR, and #SUBMARINER sparked vivid discussions on the future of #aquaculture, #fisheries, and the #blueeconomy in the Baltic Sea region. 🌍💬

📢 @BLUEBOOST Project — represented by our colleague @Fabrizio Capoccioni from @CREA Ricerca — was honored to be among the invited speakers at a conference hosted by the University of Salento (Apulia, Italy), dedicated to fostering youth entrepreneurship in the aquaculture sector. The event was part of the @Interreg Italy–Croatia
💬 During the conference, we shared insights on the objectives and methodologies of BLUEBOOST’s research activities and discussed the potential of Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) systems. The audience included local entrepreneurs, trade associations, institutional representatives from @Regione Puglia, and — most importantly — over 40 engaged students from both high schools and university programs.
🌱 We hope to have inspired the next generation of aquaculture innovators in southern Italy. Notably, @Regione Puglia has proactively supported IMTA pilot projects co-funded under the EU EMFAF program, highlighting the region’s commitment to sustainable blue growth.

BLUEBOOST was presented by Fredrik from the University of Helsinki (UH) at the annual Finnish Fish Research Days (Kansalliset kalatutkimuspäivät 2025), Jyväskylä, Finland, held on 1-2 April 2025.
Kalatutkimuspäivät is an event that brings together researchers and other interested parties for two days of interesting presentations and engaged discussion around topical issues relating to fish, fisheries, and aquaculture.
The UH team participated in the poster session, which provided an opportunity to discuss BLUEBOOST and its potential relevance in the context of Finnish marine and inland aquaculture. Low- and multi-trophic aquaculture may offer solutions to boost the sustainable production of blue foods in various locations and settings.

BLUEBOOST was presented by Raquel from S2AQUAcoLAB via a webinar on "Macroalgae, Fish, and Other Seafood - Innovation and Sustainability” event organized by EHT-Portimao. This act engages future chefs and culinary professionals from the Portimão School of Hospitality and Tourism (Escolas do Turismo de Portugal). With the growing need for sustainable food sources, this session introduced new possibilities for gastronomy, highlighting how macroalgae, sea urchins, bivalves and by-catch fish can play a key role in the future of sustainable seafood cuisine.
Our researchers had the opportunity to showcase the potential of macroalgae, sea urchin, and bivalves production, including in Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA). This was the perfect opportunity to present and disseminate the ongoing BLUEBOOST Project, discussing how this circular approach enhances sustainability by optimizing resource use and nutrient recycling, creating opportunities for innovative, eco-friendly ingredients.

XXX NATIONAL CARP CONFERENCE
JANÓW PODLASKI, POLAND
BLUEBOOST was presented by West Pomeranian University of Technology (ZUT) at the XXX National Carp Conference, Janów Podlaski, Poland. The XXX National Carp Conference was held over 3 intensive days with over 250 participants. As part of industry pitching @Piotr Eljasik had an opportunity to present BLUEBOOST to carp farmers and stakeholders. The audience was interested in solutions developed in BLUEBOOST, especially in the F-IMTA concept and new possibilities for production diversification, and are looking forward to the results. The conference concluded with a voice from the Carp Farmers Association, which stated that stronger cooperation between Scientists and Carp Farmers is required.

PLANKTONIC 3RD ANNUAL HATCHERIES EVENT

BLUEBOOST was presented by Neil Duncan from IRTA in Planktonic 3rd Annual Hatcheries Event held in Trondheim, Norway. The 3rd Annual Hatcheries Event was organised by Plantonic a company that supplies feed for larvae in marine hatcheries. The aim of this meeting was to disseminate new aquaculture developments to the aquaculture industry. The presentation of BLUEBOOST was well received, providing an insight to participants on how the industry can move towards carbon neutral aquaculture production.

AQUA FARM 2025
PORDEONE, ITALY
BLUEBOOST was presented by CREA Ricerca and Fondazione IMC in AquaFarm - Pordenone Fiere 2025 congress, Pordenone, Italy. The congress is among the most important events in Italy dedicated to the aquaculture sector. AQUA FARM 2025 was a great opportunity to meet with Italian self-funded partners to discuss how low trophic level species could environmentally and economically improve actual production models. BlueBoost project was presented to a large international audience during the speech session “Decarbonization and energy self-generation and consumption in aquaculture.”
The presentation of BLUEBOOST was well received, providing and insight to participants on how the industry can move towards carbon neutral aquaculture production.
BLUEBOOST was presented by Isasi Gairin from IRTA in a Regenerative Aquaculture Seminar held in Maó, Menorca Spain. The Regenerative Aquaculture Seminar was organised by the Balearic Ornithology and Natural Defense Group (GOB - Grup Balear d'Ornitologia i Defensa de la Naturalesa). The aim of this meeting was to publicise first-hand and value this form of aquaculture "with proven ecological, economic and social results" on an island like Menorca which, according to the organisers, "could be a pioneer in this type of crop, in line with its status as a Biosphere Reserve". The interview was well received, providing and insight to participants and has been reported in a Spanish press such as IPAC.
